Chapter 3

The next day, Thaddeus was acting weird. Whenever Sandy got close, Thaddeus sent him away to fix things that didn’t need fixing, and it had him suspicious. At first he hadn’t cared, but he didn’t like surprises and Thad was up to something.

“Who is coming?”

“You know who is coming.” Thaddeus was peeling potatoes.

“No, I don’t.”

“The guys.”

“Uh-huh.” Sandy leaned against the kitchen island only to straighten when the cold of the edge piercing him shot through him. Damn, he was translucent again. “What are you making?”

“Scalloped potatoes, ribeye steak with garlic and thyme, and a salad. I was thinking I should make garlic bread. I have it prepared, but maybe it’s too much.”

Sandy’s mouth watered. Thaddeus cooking was torture. He could breathe in the scent but not taste what he was making. It had him avoiding the kitchen most days of the week. “Garlic bread is nice.”

“I know.” Thaddeus grinned at him. “Maybe we’ll have it with the chicken wings I’ve prepared for starters.”

Sandy groaned. Chicken wings. This night would be horrible. He didn’t want to watch everyone munch away at Thaddeus’s food. He’d never tasted it, but it always smelled divine.

“I was gonna make a fancy dessert, but then I decided on chocolate pudding because I’m lazy.”

“Chocolate sounds nice.”

“I hope so.” The gaze Thaddeus gave him made Sandy hold his breath.

“Wolves can eat chocolate, right? They’re not like dogs.”

“Yes, they’ll be here in their human form, I assume.”

Thaddeus nodded and went back to his potatoes. Sandy left the kitchen and walked around the house. He loved their house. It wasn’t big, but it had everything they needed. He’d had Ric come over and chop down some trees so he had a clear view of the surroundings and would see if anyone approached. Thaddeus had put up wards so he’d notice when someone stepped onto their land. It was great.

Thaddeus was as safe as he could be here, and had Sandy been able to leave his side, the woods would be perfect hunting grounds for a wolf.

Longing filled his chest. He had everything he wanted right here, and it should be enough—it was enough. He loved his life with Thaddeus, but he mourned his freedom. He could see little pups running around playing on the ground—though he’d probably never have had kids, even if he’d been alive. Unless he’d adopted…

He spent a good amount of time staring out the window while the scents from the kitchen filled the house. Dusk was slowly rolling in over the forest and Sandy sighed. The guests would be here soon.

“Sandy!”

He bit the inside of his cheek and sighed again. “Yes!”

“Come here so I can make you solid. It’s time for you to get dressed.”

Sandy growled. He wasn’t a child needing to be told what to do. He got up and walked into the kitchen. “I’m here.”

Thaddeus flung a spray of blue sparks at him without looking. “I put your clothes on the bed.”

Thaddeus was already dressed in a white shirt and a black bow tie.
